Weaning…Are You Ready?

You’ve worked hard on getting breastfeeding off to a great start.  You’ve overcome the challenges and obstacles to really enjoy nursing your little one.  You’ve been able to get to or even surpass your breastfeeding goals with this baby.  But suddenly, you find that baby has grown, has begun sleeping longer at night, is exhibiting more interest in the food being served at the dinner table, is easily distracted during a nursing, or has begun skipping feedings at the breast.  Whether you’ve breastfed six months, one year, two years or more, at some point both you and your baby will be ready to wean–at the same time!

Arranging for a gentle, gradual weaning is often the best option for the breastfeeding couplet. Unless it is an emergency, planning for a full (or even partial) weaning has been shown to keep the lactating parent from experiencing engorgement, plugged milk ducts, or even mastitis. And for the nursling, a gradual weaning is easier on the physical and emotional health.

The IBCLCs at Breastfeeding Perspectives can help you develop such a plan and support you during the weaning phase. Just give them a call at 210-834-5399 to arrange an appointment, either virtual or in your home.

Thank you for breastfeeding!
